Center Fold vs. V-Fold Film: Is There a Difference?
In the flexible packaging and plastic film converting industry, the terms center fold film and V-fold film are often used interchangeably. This can create confusion when purchasing film, selecting a folding machine, or defining the technical requirements of a converting project.
So, are center fold film and V-fold film actually the same?
The practical answer is: usually, but not always.
A center fold describes the position of the fold and the final format of the film, while a V-fold generally describes the folding shape or process used to create that format.
What Is Center Fold Film?
Center fold film is a flat film web that has been folded lengthwise exactly—or very close to exactly—along its centerline.
After folding:
- The two film panels have equal widths.
- The folded roll width is approximately half the original open-film width.
- One side of the folded film is closed by the fold.
- The opposite side remains open.
For example, a flat film with an open width of 2,000 mm becomes a center-folded roll approximately 1,000 mm wide.
Industry definitions commonly describe center-folded film as a single-wound web folded centrally before being rewound. When opened, the total film width is approximately twice the width of the folded roll.
Center fold film is widely used in:
- Shrink packaging
- L-sealer applications
- Furniture and mattress protection
- Textile packaging
- E-commerce packaging
- Industrial covers

The open side allows the product to be inserted between the two film layers before the remaining edges are sealed. Center-fold film is therefore especially suitable for applications where a ready-made film pocket is required.
What Is V-Fold Film?
V-fold film refers primarily to the V-shaped geometry created during the folding process.
When a flat film enters a folding section, a folding triangle, folding board, plow or similar forming system redirects the web. The two sides of the film are gradually brought together, creating a V-shaped profile before the film is flattened and rewound.
When the point of the V is positioned exactly on the centerline of the web, the final product is center-folded film.
Therefore:
A center fold can be produced through a V-folding process, but a V-fold does not necessarily have to be positioned exactly in the center.
If the folding point is moved away from the web centerline, one film panel becomes wider than the other. This creates an off-center fold rather than a true center fold.

When Are They Different?
The terms become different when the V-shaped folding system is adjusted to create unequal film panels.
For example, a 2,000 mm flat film could be folded into:
- 1,000 mm + 1,000 mm: true center fold
- 950 mm + 1,050 mm: off-center fold
- 800 mm + 1,200 mm: offset fold
All three formats may be produced using a V-folding mechanism, but only the first configuration is a true center fold.
An offset fold may be intentionally selected when the packaging process requires:
- A closing flap
- Additional sealing material
- An overlapping film section
- Asymmetrical product coverage
- Special downstream bag-making operations
- A specific printed-film position
For this reason, the required finished panel dimensions should always be clearly stated when requesting a film-folding machine.
How Is Center-Fold Film Produced?
A typical center-folding process consists of the following stages:
1. Film Unwinding
The flat film is unwound under controlled tension. Stable tension is essential because variations can move the fold line and create wrinkles.
2. Web Guiding
An edge-guiding system keeps the incoming film aligned. Even a small lateral movement at the unwinder can create a significant edge mismatch after folding.
3. Folding Section
The film passes through a folding triangle, V-folding board or folding plow. The web changes direction while both sides are brought together.
4. Fold Position Adjustment
The folding system is adjusted so that the fold is positioned at the center or at a specified offset.
5. Flattening and Air Removal
Guide rollers, spreader rollers or flattening rollers help remove trapped air and stabilize the two film layers.
6. Rewinding
The folded film is rewound with controlled tension and winding torque. The objective is to produce a straight, stable roll without wrinkles, telescoping or excessive edge pressure.
Why Accurate Center Folding Matters
Center folding may appear to be a simple mechanical operation, but poor fold accuracy can cause serious problems in downstream packaging equipment.
Common problems include:
- Misaligned open edges
- Fold-position variation
- Diagonal wrinkles
- Trapped air between the layers
- Film stretching
- Uneven winding hardness
- Telescoping rolls
- Creased or damaged film
- Unstable feeding into packaging machines
- Incorrect registration of printed film
A properly produced center-fold roll should have a consistent fold position, aligned edges and stable winding quality throughout the entire roll.
This is particularly important in automatic packaging machines, where inconsistent folding can result in sealing errors, film tracking problems, production stops and increased material waste. Film suppliers and converters therefore need to consider factors such as roll alignment, core dimensions, edge quality, winding direction and maximum roll diameter.
Center Fold Film vs. Single-Wound Film
Center-fold film should not be confused with single-wound film.
Single-wound film consists of one flat film layer wound directly onto the core. Its usable web width is the same as the roll width.
Center-fold film consists of two film layers connected by a longitudinal fold. Its open-film width is approximately twice its folded roll width.
For example:

Is Center Fold Film the Same as Tubular Film?
No.
Tubular film is a closed film tube with two closed side edges. Center-fold film has one folded edge and one open side.
However, center-fold film can also be produced by slitting tubular blown film along one side. After slitting, the tube becomes a folded sheet with one closed fold and one open side. This is one of the established production methods for center-folded film.
Alternatively, a wide single-layer flat film can be folded and rewound using a dedicated film-folding machine.
Which Term Should Be Used in a Machine Specification?
For a general commercial description, the following terms are commonly understood:
- Center Fold Film
- Center-Folded Film
- Centre-Fold Film
- V-Fold Film
- V-Folding Machine

For a technical quotation or machine specification, it is better to define the actual finished geometry instead of relying only on terminology.
A clear specification should include:
- Incoming film width
- Finished folded width
- Width of the first panel
- Width of the second panel
- Center or offset fold requirement
- Film thickness
- Film material
- Maximum roll diameter
- Core diameter
- Required production speed
- Printed or unprinted film
- Required edge-alignment tolerance
- Winding direction
- Open-side orientation
For example:
Incoming film width: 2,600 mm
Finished folded width: 1,300 mm
Fold type: Center fold
Panel widths: 1,300 mm + 1,300 mm
Open edges: Aligned
Material: LDPE
Final format: Double-layer center-folded roll
This description is significantly clearer than simply requesting a “V-fold machine.”
Which Films Can Be Center Folded?
Depending on the film properties and machine configuration, center-folding equipment can process materials such as:
- LDPE
- HDPE
- Polyolefin shrink film
- PP
- CPP
- OPP
- Laminated films
- Printed packaging films
- Industrial protective films
The correct machine configuration depends on film thickness, stiffness, surface friction, static electricity, shrink characteristics and sensitivity to tension.
Very thin, slippery, elastic or printed films may require additional tension-control, web-guiding, anti-static or register-control solutions.
Center Fold or V-Fold: Which One Should You Request?
Choose center fold when both film panels must have equal widths.
Choose an offset or off-center fold when one panel must be intentionally wider than the other.
Use the term V-folding machine when referring to the folding principle or equipment, but always specify the required final panel dimensions.
The most important information is not the terminology itself. It is the required final geometry of the converted film.
Conclusion
Center fold film and V-fold film usually refer to the same type of folded plastic film in everyday industry terminology. However, there is a small but important technical distinction:
- V-fold describes how the film is folded.
- Center fold describes where the fold is positioned.
When the V-shaped folding point is located exactly at the center of the web, the result is center-folded film. When the folding point is offset, the same V-folding process produces unequal panels and should be described as an off-center or offset fold.
